¶ Autofocus Fails: Laser Head Stops Lowering Before Contacting Material - X Series
Automatic focusing simplifies job setup, but if your laser head stops descending midway before touching the material, your focal distance will be completely off. This troubleshooting guide addresses why your Z-axis stops lowering prematurely—often while displaying Z: 0.000 on the control panel—and provides clear steps to resolve software parameter caps, sensor jams, and cable strain.
¶ Problem Description
The laser head stops moving downward midway before reaching the bottom limit of the lead screw, preventing autofocus from reaching its minimum height. At the same time, the control panel displays the Z-axis coordinate as already having reached 0.000.
¶ Cause
- Incorrect Software Limits: The Max Travel value for the Z-axis in Machine Settings was modified.
- Stuck Autofocus Sensor Trigger: The physical trigger pin inside the autofocus sensor is jammed, causing the sensor to continuously report a triggered state so the system controller assumes the head has hit its limit.
- Restricted Cables or Air Tubing: Over time, the autofocus wiring harness or air assist tube has slipped out from the back of the laser head assembly. As the head travels downward, it pulls the lines taut, mechanically stopping further downward travel.
¶ Solution
¶ Step 1. Check Software Parameters
Open Machine Settings in LightBurn and expand the Z Axis Settings menu.
Verify that the Max Travel parameter is correctly set to 50. If it differs, update the value to 50, write the settings to the controller, and test again.
¶ Step 2. Inspect the Autofocus Sensor
Use your finger to gently push the central trigger block of the autofocus sensor upward and release it. Verify whether it springs back smoothly or remains jammed in the middle of the sensor housing.
¶ Step 3. Inspect Cable and Air Tube Clearance
Inspect the rear of the laser head for any pulled-tight wiring or air tubing. Gently pull a small amount of slack back into the laser head enclosure until there is sufficient strain relief and the head can move down through its full range of motion without pulling on the lines.
