Automatic focusing simplifies job setup, but if your laser head stops descending midway before touching the material, your focal distance will be completely off. This troubleshooting guide addresses why your Z-axis stops lowering prematurely—often while displaying Z: 0.000 on the control panel—and provides clear steps to resolve software parameter caps, sensor jams, and cable strain.
The laser head stops moving downward midway before reaching the bottom limit of the lead screw, preventing autofocus from reaching its minimum height. At the same time, the control panel displays the Z-axis coordinate as already having reached 0.000.
Open Machine Settings in LightBurn and expand the Z Axis Settings menu.
Verify that the Max Travel parameter is correctly set to 50. If it differs, update the value to 50, write the settings to the controller, and test again.
Use your finger to gently push the central trigger block of the autofocus sensor upward and release it. Verify whether it springs back smoothly or remains jammed in the middle of the sensor housing.

Inspect the rear of the laser head for any pulled-tight wiring or air tubing. Gently pull a small amount of slack back into the laser head enclosure until there is sufficient strain relief and the head can move down through its full range of motion without pulling on the lines.
